A family paid builder Ian Hadden £14,000 - this is what they were left with

Redcar family slams sentence given to Ian Malcolm Hadden after he was ordered to pay them just £1,000 compensation

This is the mess that a Redcar family of five’s house was left in by rogue trader Ian Hadden.

Samantha Shilton and Daniel Jackson looked into getting a loft conversion done for their growing family back in September 2013.

Having paid Hadden a total of £14,300 for work that has never been completed, the couple came to court to “see justice”.

But Sam, 32, and Daniel, 36, were “livid” to see Hadden spared jail and told to pay them just £1,000 back.

“I feel like he has completely got away with it,” said Sam, a part-time kitchen assistant, who lives in Muriel Street with Daniel, a chef, and children Joshua, 12, Alice, 10, Sophia, six, Patrick, five, and a two-year-old foster child.

“We knew he was bankrupt so we didn’t think we’d get any money back but we thought he’d go to prison.

“He has to pay us all back at a total of £200 a month due to how much disposable income he had after earning £400 a week - but we don’t even have that much to spare.”

Sam is repaying her employer, who remortgaged their own house to loan the money to the family, at a rate of £200 a month over six years.

“I also got another loan out last year to pay for the loft to get redone but I feel like I’ve lost all trust in builders,” she said.

“Some came out and, after seeing the state of it, never came back.”

Thankfully the Fat Lads on Bikes - run by Neal Bullock from Ingleby Barwick - have stepped in to help the family after hearing of their plight and have enlisted the help of Aspect Plastering to do up their loft at cost price.

The charity has already helped Jamie and Zoe Hallam, from Saltburn, who were also victims of Hadden.

Their five-year-old son Theo had to sleep in the family’s dining room for over a year after they lost £10,000 to Hadden and were left with an unfinished loft conversion.

The Shilton-Jackson family home will be completed within the next few weeks.

“They are angels and we’re so grateful to them,” said Sam.

“Even at cost price, because of what we’ve already paid out, it’s the most expensive loft conversion ever.”

Once complete, Joshua will move up to the loft, the parents can have their own room back to themselves, the girls can share a room while Patrick can have the box room.
